NEXT MEETING
A huge thank you for your generous response to our August fund raising appeal! I was apprehensive about doing our first solicitation just as the economy was slowing. But in spite of really bad news these past two weeks, your response has been a steady flow of checks to our P.O. Box - more than $5,000 so far. Thank you, thank you for your commitment! I suspect there may be a few of you receiving this e-mail whose full names and U.S. mail addresses we didn't have on that list. Should you too want to contribute too, our appeal letter and return card follow this message.
Stonington retailer BARRAZA has offered to make their upcoming fashion show benefit CUSH. New York fashion designer, Maria Barraza, who established her private label design and manufacturing business in 1988 (and sells to Nordstroms, Saks Fifth Avenue and other upscale retailers), will display her sumptuous line at a fashion show brunch Saturday, October 11, 11 am to 2 pm. Staged in the new La Grua Center (the revitalized 1812 Foundry Building in Stonington Borough), the benefit will feature Maria's luxurious pants, skirts, jackets and dresses in unique texture colorations - along with her organic cotton Yoga and Spa Wear line, Paz Yoga. Add in inspired organic foods and a humorous spiel on “Going Green, Healthy & Radiant," for an exuberant beginning to the Columbus Day weekend. To reserve tickets ($55 in advance; $60 at door, and $50 each if you book three reservations), call (860) 535-2025.
Meanwhile, enjoy these gorgeous fall days on the water!
Warm wishes,
Gracelyn
Dear CUSH Supporter:
In the fall of 2006 CUSH was formed with the objective of restoring a healthy aquatic environment to coastal waters between the Mystic and Pawcatuck Rivers. Shoreline residents quickly saw the importance of CUSH’s goals and responded with needed startup funding.
Since then, we have made great strides in educating residents:
· Created a website for immediate community access to pertinent facts (www.cushinc.org).
· Created a membership brochure explaining how to reduce non-point sources of pollution.
· Developed a boater’s brochure promoting environmentally safe practices and listing local marinas that provide pump out services
· Helped halt plans that would have enabled rezoning and high density development along Route #1 in the environmentally sensitive Anguilla Brook watershed.
· Elicited 17 newspaper articles (one per month in four local papers) about what residents can do to protect harbor areas.
· Launched a Harbor Friendly Yard campaign, delivering four-page coastal yard care guides to 24,000 residents of Mystic, Stonington Borough, and Pawcatuck and distributing small Harbor Friendly Yard signs to residents who agree to follow our recommended gardening practices.
This summer CUSH will begin the second vital part of its mission: establishing on-going water testing to monitor quality and identify pollutants. The goal is to trace pollution to its source and reduce or eliminate the influx. Water samples collected by local volunteers, trained by University of Rhode Island’s Watershed Watch, will be drawn weekly and monthly. Testing will measure dissolved oxygen, pH, bacteria, nitrogen, phosphorous, and other pollutants. The Watershed Watch program has twenty years experience directing water sampling and is a certified laboratory. Their volunteer-drawn data is scientifically accurate, relied on by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
One season of water testing is considered a mere “snapshot” of what is occurring in harbor waters, however. Only testing over several seasons provides irrefutable scientific proof. Valid data is essential, and we consider water testing half of our mission. But we are dependent on your financial support to make it possible. We were surprised and grateful for the enthusiasm and contributions that quickly launched CUSH. Please enable our educational and water testing programs to continue by returning the enclosed card with your generous, tax deductible gift.
Our sincere thanks,
Gracelyn Guyol, President
