How Watersheds Impact
How Watersheds Impact Long Island Sound
Free Lecture to Feature Pawcatuck as Example
Stonington, CT-Nature Conservancy State Director Dr. Lise A. Hanners and Kevin Essington, Director of Borderlands Landscape Programs, will deliver a lecture at 7:30 pm, Wednesday, August 8, at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club meeting room, 186 ½ Water Street, Stonington Borough. The talk is free and open to the public.
Nature Conservancy is a leader in efforts to clean up Long Island Sound. Reducing overall nitrogen levels is one of the primary goals since numerous studies have demonstrated that elevated nitrogen leads to oxygen depletion. Low oxygen contributes to the demise of marine animals and plants necessary to maintain a healthy ecosystem.
What many people do not realize is how runoff from watersheds - lands miles away - can impact harbor water quality via surface streams and rivers. Dr. Hanner's lecture will cover why the Conservancy is focusing on rivers connected to Long Island Sound. Mr. Essington will discuss how this impacts local waters, using the Pawcatuck area as an example.
CUSH, Inc. is a non-profit aimed at improving Stonington harbors quality by reducing non-point sources of pollution through water testing and consumer education. For more information, go to www.cleanupstoningtonharbor.com.
ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER MICHAEL DOMBECK
TO SPEAK IN STONINGTON
Free Lecture June 20 at 7:30 pm at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club
Stonington, CT-Dr. Michael Dombeck, Chief of the United States Forest Service under President Clinton, will talk about clean drinking water sources and water pollution issues in Long Island Sound. How is the Forest Service related to protecting water? Three quarters of fresh drinking water used west of the Mississippi comes from National Forest land. Dr. Dombeck's efforts to secure roadless areas on government property were primarily aimed at reducing pollution of these critical drinking water resources.
Other upcoming environmental lectures will include Dr. Lise Hanners, Executive Director of Connecticut Nature Conservancy, on August 8 and Charles Gauvin, President of Trout Unlimited, on October 10. The lectures are free and held at 7:30 p.m. at Stonington Harbor Yacht Club, 32 Water Street, Stonington, Connecticut.
CUSH, is a new non-profit citizen group devoted to cleaning up Stonington harbors (from Mystic River to the Pawcatuck River) through water testing to identify pollutants and reduction through consumer education. For more CUSH information, go to www.cleanupstoningtonharbor.com.
