How Can Boaters Help?
Please review the brochure below regarding
boaters in Stonington Harbor.
We have identified the Enemy, and…it is us.
The quality of water on which we boat is our responsibility. With just a few changes in how we prepare and maintain our boats, we can improve water quality and help restore marine life in Stonington harbors and beyond.
You Can Make a Difference
Stonington harbors are being polluted and boaters are one cause. This brochure lists some of the things you can do to reduce levels of toxins. Keep it as a handy reference onboard.
Holding Tank Discharge
Just don't (this includes animal waste). The whole area from the Pawcatuck River to the Mystic River, including Fisher's Island Sound, is a designated No Discharge zone with $2,500 to $25,000 fines for violations.
Use the pump-out facility at one of the marinas in this brochure or call the pump-out boat on VHF channel 8. Since pump-outs will eventually go through Stonington sewage treatment plants, please don't use holding tank additives such as formaldehyde, ammonia, alcohol, or chlorine.
To report polluters confidentially, call CUSH 1 860 949-0911. Describe what you observed, the name of the vessel, date, time, location, and how to contact you.
Fueling
Use the "No Spill" system for fueling (fastens to side of boat).
Bottom Paints
If you use ablative paint, do not clean your boat bottom. Hard paint can be cleaned in the water if it is non-toxic paint, for example, Bottom Shield or Bottom Pro.
Environmentally Friendly Cleaning
When you clean your boat, use:
• Starbrite Seasafe products: Boat Wash, Bilge Cleaner, Wash & Wax. • Vinegar for cleaning mold, glass, countertops, and heads. • Baking Soda for holding tanks and heads. • Murphy's Oil Soap for wood surfaces. • Simple Green, Cleaning & Greening, and Shaklee Basic H products for gen- eral cleaning. • Joy or Shaklee Dish Wash for dishes.
Anti-Freeze
In the spring, don't discharge anti-freeze into the harbor unless you use non-toxic products such as Seafit which is potable, or better yet…
Try inexpensive vodka and make our harbor "happy."
Bilge Cleaning and Maintenance
The biggest bilge contaminate is oil. Purchase Bilge Pro ($39) which pumps only water overboard.
Place an oil cloth in the bilge under your engine. Carry an oil absorbent kit in case of oil spills.
Teak
Most commercial teak cleaning products are not only toxic to the environment, but can be harmful to your health-this includes ammonia.
Use an oil-based soap with a non-bristle scrubber. Unfortunately, the best result comes from elbow grease and sanding.
