CUSH Achievements in 2007
In our first year as a non-profit, with a Board of five, an all volunteer staff, and a wildly supportive media and community, CUSH accomplished the following:
Incorporated, obtained 501(c)(3) status, and established a Board
Developed a logo
Created and distributed a Membership Brochure describing our mission with an invitation to join
Received donation of 200 yellow membership gift hats, embroidered with CUSH and “Flo” (our mascot fish)
Created an environmentally safe Boater's Brochure to help reduce pollution from 3,000 local crafts
Established a web site, www.cushinc.org, for immediate community access to information
Held three environmental lectures, attracting between 30-50 people each.
Held two meetings with towns of Groton, Westerly, and Stonington to improve pumpout service in local harbors. Stonington agreed to construct a new pumpout boat discharge station at a sewage treatment facility in 2009, with CUSH handling grant writing.
Helped halt zoning changes and plans for high density development in environmentally sensitive marshlands along Route #1 in the Anguilla Brook watershed
Began laying plans for a water testing program
Received $21,000 in donations from local residents
Generated 17 features, one a month, in four local newspapers about CUSH and how to protect the harbor
